I’m delighted that The Congressional Chorus will be performing “Common Link” on their 25th season opening concert on November 5!
I’ll be giving a TEDx talk on October 22 in Venice. The general topic is “Fabric As a Medium For Beauty”, and I’ll be talking about beauty in music—particularly in regards to musical texture—and how this figures in my compositional process. I’m excited to be talking about one of my favorite subjects!
Fabric As a Medium For Beauty
October 22, 2011 2:30-4:30PM
1416 Electric Ave, Venice CA 90291
We express beauty in many different ways, through many different fabrics.
- The artist’s canvas
- The fabric for a beautiful dress.
- Artifacts, tools and technology designed from geometric concepts.
- Skin as a fabric for human beauty
How does the innovator/artist use respective fabrics (either physical and conceptual) to express beauty? What is the relationship between the beauty they want to express, and the fabric through which it is communicated? Is the beauty given form by the fabric, or the other way around? How is beauty brought from the realm of ideas into form as fabric?

What is TEDX?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxLAMiracleMile, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxLAMiracleMile event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. For more information please visit TED.com/TEDx.
This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
